Thousand-Handed Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva
Across myriad rivers and mountains, compassion appears in skillful ways.
The Bodhisattva journeys west to fulfill vows of the past.
Seeing the world’s great sufferings, tirelessly offering rescue and solace,
Guarding sentient beings with affinity, guiding them to the Pure Land.
Thousand Eyes Illuminate, Thousand Hands Protect
On July 1, 2006, the sacred statue of the Thousand-Handed Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva was enshrined. The statue radiates perfection, magnificence, and solemnity. The forty hands of the Bodhisattva, with their mudrās and ritual implements, were sculpted in three dimensions in accordance with the Sūstra of the Great Compassion Dharani of the Thousand-Handed Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva and The Secret Dharma of the Thousand-Light-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Sūtra.
Carved from a Taiwan red cypress with a diameter of 300 cm, the statue reaches a total height of 315 cm including its lotus pedestal. The statue weighs more than one metric ton, and stands entirely free of support from the surrounding walls! The statue presented a major challenge: how to allow devotees to circumambulate the Bodhisattva safely. Through collective brainstorming, by adopting a cloud-shaped panel for supporting, the carving team overcame the obstacles and created a true miracle! The Bodhisattva statue is currently enshrined in a main hall converted from a garage. Due to limited space, accidental contact has caused damage to the lotus pedestal and the statue’s delicate fingers. For this reason, the temple is earnestly seeking to establish a dedicated Great Compassion Hall to properly enshrine the sacred statue.
