Protect Living Beings

Though tiny are insects and worms, our compassion extends;
Sentient beings cling deeply to their bodies with attachment.
Roots, stems, flowers, leaves—with care we gently inspect,
With a mindful heart,we safeguard them and gather blessed merits.

Potalaka Temple makes every effort to protect sentient beings, for example:

Inspecting Vegetables

All fresh produce is checked for insects and worms, which are then picked up and relocated to a safe place.

Fresh vegetables and fruits are inspected for insects, which are then gently removed and released back to nature.

Inspecting Firewood and Releasing Insects

Because insects or worms may hide in firewood, every log is examined before being used for heating in cold weather.

During winter, we burn firewood indoors, but insects may live inside the wood, and spiders, ants, or other small creatures may cling to its surface. Before burning, each piece of wood is carefully inspected inside and out. Wood that is free of insects is used, while any wood containing insects is set aside and the creatures are released back to nature.

Caring for Creatures on the Driveway

After rain, worms, slugs, and other small creatures may crawl onto the driveway. Before driving, the paths are checked for any worms, slugs, or similar creatures. If found, they are gently picked up and relocated to a suitable place to ensure their safety.
