Volunteers

Finding a few days of leisure in this world,
Hasten toward the Three Jewels, merit’s supreme field.
Escape the hustle and bustle, inclining toward quietude,
World and transcendence, the roots of virtue fulfilled.

Pure faith disciples, skillfully protect and aid;
Mind on sangharama, they attend and never fade.
Diligently cultivate the three karmas, merit grows each day;
Perfect the pure causes, and fulfill Bodhi’s task

Fellowship between sangha and lay people

Fellowship is one of The Four Embracing Virtues (四攝法) (catvāri saṃgraha-vastūni), which ones can practice by working together (tongshi). Volunteers, under the guidance of the resident Sangha, help to adorn and dignify the temple. This both supports the temple and allows lay practitioners to experience firsthand life of the monastics — showing that cultivating body, speech, and mind are not abstract but embodied in ordinary, mindful daily activities.

Whether our volunteers have come from far across the ocean or just from the next town, we are united by a single purpose — the Dharma. Our meeting here is no accident. In the refuge of the Three Jewels we nurture goodness and plant the seeds of virtue together.
